How it works

Ensuring safety for child refugees transitioning into Baca’s care is paramount. Initial risk assessments, safety plans, and emergency support are implemented in the early days, gradually reducing as young people build essential life skills, with ongoing 24/7 on-call support throughout their journey toward independence.

Days 1-2

Focus: Risk assessments and safety plans.

In the initial meeting, we record essential details, take a photo, and note distinguishing features. Risk assessments are conducted, and a safety plan is introduced for potential trafficking cases. Mobile phones and money are securely held by staff.

The young person receives an ID card with their name, photo, and emergency contact information. If they have a mobile phone, they are encouraged to add emergency numbers. 24/7 on-call support ensures they have immediate support.

Weeks 1-2

Focus: Following safety plan and learning basic safety.

Safety plans are implemented, and high-risk individuals are accompanied outside, with location details withheld.

The young person is educated on road safety, proper appliance usage, and the importance of carrying their ID card. Building trust in the police and authority figures is emphasised.

Continuous 24/7 on-call support remains available.

Months 1-4

Focus: Safety plan reduced and safety education consolidated.

Safety plans are gradually reduced as young people demonstrate responsibility and understanding of safety.

Education on safety extends to the role of emergency services, highlighting the importance of the police. Guidance on interacting with strangers, reacting to various situations, and road safety is also provided. Ongoing 24/7 on-call support ensures assistance when needed.

Focus: Monitoring safety and enhanced safety workshops.

Continual checks on appliance use and safety reminders are reinforced. Workshops, English lessons, and general support reinforce safety. Support regarding safeguarding valuable items like bikes, smartphones, and laptops is provided.

24/7 on-call support for any emergencies remains available.

Move to Independence

Focus: Safety emphasis for independent living.

Safety is reiterated for new living environments as the young person moves to independence. 24/7 on-call support remains accessible for ongoing assistance.
